Question / Help Need to record system sound when speakers are muted

I would like to record audio only from a webcast in Chrome. I have no devices plugged into my laptop, and I am using my laptop speakers. I am running Windows 10. I would like to have the recording volume independent of the speakers, so that I can turn down or mute the speakers but still record at 100% volume in OBS.

The volume OBS is recording at appears to change with the volume of the speakers, and when the speakers are muted I record no audio. I have looked at my Volume Mixer, and OBS does show as an option with a volume level, but the level appears tied to the speaker level. Although I can independently make the OBS volume *lower* than the speaker volume, moving it higher than the speaker volume just moves the speaker slider up.

I am using the Conexant ISST Audio Driver.

I found two people suggesting that the default behaviour of OBS is to record at 100% regardless:

This is not the case in my setup, and I am wondering if there is any way to achieve it?

Here's a log of me recording from a Chrome tab - I muted and unmuted the speakers several times during the recording.

Thanks for any help, and apologies if I missed some troubleshooting, I am very new to this.

Download VoiceMeeter.. Set the system audio to Voicemeeter Input (VAIO, VAIO 3 didn't work for me)
In Voicemeeter set the output to your laptop speakers.. now record audio from Voicemeeter Input (set to 100% volume in windows) and drop the sound for the laptop speakers in Voicemeeter.
You can use Voicemeeter to split audio to multiple outputs as well.

Hopefully this helps put you on the right track..
