OBS GPU Usage 30-40%

Hi all,

I know there's a few threads about similar issues but I've tried many things and not having any luck. Also wanted to upload my own log for people to check, which is here: https://obsproject.com/logs/0OcRDCNBK3HwrRmV

So basically when I launch OBS, my GPU usage goes straight up to 30-40%, sometimes a tiny bit higher but no more than 50%. This is just launching OBS, not recording or streaming, simply having the program open causes this spike. I've done this with minimal other programs open as well to test

PC specs -
OS: Windows 10 Pro
Mobo: Asus ROG Maximus XII Hero
CPU: i9-10700k
RAM: Corsair Vengence RGB DDR4 32GB
GPU: Zotac 3080
PSU: Corsair CX850M

Considering I have a 3080, OBS shouldn't be using almost half of my GPU, surely? I don't particularly think I have a lot going on in my OBS, it's fairly standard stuff. I do VTubing so maybe a few more captures than normal but still not a lot

Graphics driver is fully up to date, OBS is fully up to date

I tried creating a new scene collection, so no captures, sources, nothing, and my GPU usage doesn't change at all. I really have no idea what could be causing it. I haven't tried a fresh install just cause I don't really wanna set everything back up again or miss something

As a side note, I have been having other random video crashes recently which last for a second or two. I do think I'm having some GPU issues in general atm, this is something I've tested a lot as well and not had much luck with. Whether that's relevant to OBS GPU usage or not I don't know, maybe the log will help

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Completely remove the plugins and test again. Normally this is the issue when you hit an overusage on the CPU / GPU.

So I removed a reverb plugin (that I rarely used tbh) and the Streamelements plugin (replacing the activity feed and chat with the built-in ones) and I do see a slight decrease in GPU usage but not much, like 5-7%

I noticed that if I close the chat and activity feed docks, and switch to a scene collection that's empty, my GPU usage goes to around 15-20% which might be about right?

I've never noticed this really being an issue before but how come just having the chat and activity in OBS uses like 10% of my GPU? Seems like a lot. The other 10% comes from all my sources I suppose, which to me sounds relatively normal

Any suggestions to lower this even more? Unfortunately only have two screens otherwise I'd just use my Twitch dashboard for the chat and activity feed

I might add that I'm wanting to stream the Dead Space remake, this hasn't been an issue until now. I've read that Dead Space has had some issues with GPU usage so this probably doesn't help either. But it still begs the question why my OBS uses so much GPU, if you ask me, 30%-ish is still too much for a 3080

Having the same issue. From one day to another the GPU usage spiked to almost 40 up to 60 %! Running a 3060 Ti and IMHo it seems game dependent!? That what worries me most, since THIS makes it hard to predict when OBS will go rogue (again).

Usually, with everything enabled (Streamelements, Restream, Alerts Discord snatcher AND the virtual camera on), the OBS usage is between 6 to 12 %. When I played e. g. Enshrouded, it jumped up to 60 and 100 %. WTF!? Dropped frames where my least issue. Same with other not so GPU heavy games like Sons of the Forest. If I run far more GPU demanding games like Remnant 2 or New World on max (!) settings - it hardly jumps above the mentioned 12 %.

P. S.: Encoding via NVEnc x264
